Some might be surprised that their Zune can also be used as a mass storage device (external hard drive) but yes, it can, however, not right out of the box. Today we’ll show you the steps you need to tak in order to make Windows recognize Zune as a mass storage device instead of a media player. The steps involved are fairly straight forward and easy to foolow so we will walk you through them now.
- 1st: Unplug your Zune (if it was plugged in to begin with) and make sure your Zune software is not running. note: this step is very important for the procedure to work.
- 2nd: Click on your “Start” tab (lower left on your screen) then click “Run”, then type in “regedt32″ (this will open your registry editor).
- 3rd: Next, you will expand the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - System - ControlSet001 - Enum - USB. Now you need to find your “PortableDeviceNameSpace”, this will be found in Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above \USB\ The “##” listed will be letters and corresponding to your Zune player.
- 4th Now you must change these values, EnableLegacySupport to 1, PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0, and finally change ShowInShell to 1.
- 5th Next start your Zune software and plug in your Zune player. Now you should be able to open “My Computer” to browse through the files in your Zune. However, windows will not assign it a drive letter but it will work just the same. You should also be able to continue using all your Sync and Zune software features just as you had prior but now with the added ability of using it as a mass storage device as well.
Thats all there is to it, pretty cool huh?
